In Russia, the term “foreign agent” is used to describe individuals or organizations that are deemed to be acting on behalf of foreign interests. This label has become increasingly controversial in recent years due to its association with espionage and political oppression. The Russian government has used the “foreign agent” label to target and limit the activities of both Russian and foreign organizations.

The use of the term “foreign agent” is seen as absurd and illogical by many because it implies guilt by association. By labeling individuals or organizations as “foreign agents”, the Russian government is effectively saying that they are guilty of espionage or other nefarious activities without providing any evidence or proof. This has led to accusations of political persecution, as the “foreign agent” label can be used to silence dissent and limit free speech. In addition, it has been argued that the term is used to bolster the power of the Russian government over its citizens and to further its own interests.

In all publications, including the internet, books, and videos, foreign agents are required to add a text reminding people that they are unwelcome in their country. The most frightening part is that anyone — an individual, company, or nonprofit organization — can be classified as a foreign agent.
On the background, you can see Erik Bulatov's painting titled "Freedom". As a Moscow Conceptualist, he understands what government oppression is, and in the end, freedom always prevails.
